Mary Catherine Olenchuk was 13 years old when she left the beach via bicycle in Ogunquit to go the store for gum and a newspaper. She was last seen talking to a man in his 30's outside of the Lookout Hotel around 5pm which was just near her home. The man was driving a maroon sedan, and a witness said it appeared as if Mary was giving the man directions and then got into his car. Mary Catherine never made it home. Her mom called and reported her missing at 7pm. The police located the bicycle she was riding in the entryway to the Lookout Hotel. On August 22, 1970, 13 days later, Mary Catherine's body was found inside of a barn in Kennebunkport. The medical examiner found that Mary Catherine had been strangled with a piece of rope around her neck, there were no other injuries to her body. Law enforcement believe that whoever committed this crime was familiar with the barn where Mary was found. Mary's father, General Peter Olenchuk, oversaw Operation Chase which loaded Army loaded chemical weapons onto ships and dumped them into the ocean. The day prior to Mary Catherine's disappearance, a newspaper reported that a threat from a student group said it would kidnap the families of those involved with Operation Chase. It is still believed to this day that Mary Catherine was abducted and murdered because of her father's work. Mary Catherine was fully clothed and there was no evidence of sexual assault so besides that of her father's work, there is no motive for the abduction and murder.
