In 1998, retired NYPD detective Albert Ward was shot and killed during a robbery while running a gambling parlor in Harlem. At age 22, Jon Velazquez was picked out of a lineup by several people as the shooter. He spent nearly 24 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. In 2021, he was granted clemency and released. Velazquez' lawyers stated that not only was his DNA not present, but the eyewitnesses' testimonies were inconsistent, and his phone records backed up his alibi.
