Jane Marie was studying botany for college and frequently went to Blackbird State Forest to conduct research and take notes. On September 20, 1986, she was found in the forest with a gunshot to her back and scantily clothed. The last notes she had taken were from the previous day in the morning. The forest is very popular for hunters and one local hunter was taken into custody and questioned; however, DNA excluded him as a suspect. A cold case unit began reexamining the case in 2015 but have not come up with any new evidence or suspects.
