In 1983, in Oregon, Diane Downs showed up at the emergency room with her three children in the car ages, 8, 7, and 3. They had all been shot and there was blood all over the car. Diane told emergency room staff that she was flagged down by a man looking for a ride. She said they had left a friend's house and while the children were sleeping in the backseat, she wanted to do some sightseeing in the dark. This is where she says she ran into the man who was hitchhiking. Upon arriving at the hospital, her middle child Cheryl was already deceased. Her other children were clinging to live. Downs herself had been shot in the left arm and her wound was not life threatening. Detectives thought the story was fishy from the get-go-she was the biggest threat to the man, not the sleeping children, so why would this man shoot the children at close range and only shoot her in the arm? Prior to her trial, Diane got pregnant again and gave birth to another baby girl. This baby was adopted by another couple ten days before Downs' sentencing. Diane was eventually charged with life plus 50 years. Her two surviving children were adopted by the lead prosecutor in the case in 1986.
